A strong opening audience
The premiere on 22 April 2007 reached a consolidated audience of 8.55 million. Series averages later declined, but all three runs retained a substantial broadcast audience.
A deliberately gentle drama
Reviews often responded to the same qualities in different ways: Stephen Fry’s restrained central performance, eccentric local cases, Norfolk scenery and the mixture of comfort with grief. The archive should preserve favourable and critical reactions rather than flattening reception into a single verdict.
Cancellation and the unfinished story
On 9 October 2009 Stephen Fry announced that ITV would not commission a fourth series. His account emphasised the Norfolk communities, local background artists and East Anglian crew involved in making the programme. The final parentage revelation therefore became an unintended unresolved ending.

- Regional scheduling differences, including Series 3’s broadcast history.
- International sales, public-television carriage and later streaming records.
- Viewer memories labelled as testimony rather than production evidence.
- Repeat schedules and rediscovery, kept separate from original ratings.
