A Kingdom-inspired walk around Swaffham

Use the real town’s public landmarks to understand how Swaffham became Market Shipborough—without treating homes and businesses as a film set.

1. Begin at the Buttercross

The Grade I-listed Market Cross, built in 1781–83, anchors both the real Market Place and many screen journeys. It is the clearest place to compare Swaffham’s civic centre with fictional Market Shipborough.

2. Read the surrounding frontages

Walk the public pavements around Market Place and look for the way production used individual façades to imply a compact town. Oakleigh House supplied the Kingdom & Kingdom exterior; remember that screen buildings may be private or in everyday use.

3. Visit the Museum of Swaffham

The museum and information centre at 4 London Street covers the town’s much longer story. Its current Market Town Trail links ten heritage sites, including the Buttercross, church and Pedlar sign.

4. Find the Startled Duck connection

Published location research identifies The Greyhound as the building used for the Startled Duck. Check its present identity and public opening conditions: a screen location may now be a different business, and it should be approached on its own terms.

5. Add the town’s own story

Kingdom is only one layer. The Pedlar legend, St Peter and St Paul’s Church and the town’s market history explain why the location felt convincing before cameras arrived.

6. Return through Market Place

Finish by looking back across the different façades around the square. The production’s achievement was not merely finding a picturesque landmark, but using a working town to imply a complete fictional community.

Plan respectfully

Use public routes, do not enter private property, and ask before photographing people or trading premises. The Charter Market currently operates on Saturdays; times, parking and access can change, so use the council’s live information.
