Norfolk field guide · checked September 2026

Visit the world behind Kingdom

Practical, responsible routes through the real places that helped create Market Shipborough.

The important geography

Swaffham is inland. Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham are on the north Norfolk coast. Trying to see all three without a car requires careful timetable planning; never treat the fictional town as a single walkable destination.

A balanced one-day route

  1. Morning · SwaffhamExplore Market Place, the Butter Cross and public town-centre viewpoints. Allow time to see the setting as a living market town, not merely a television backdrop.
  2. Travel northContinue towards Wells-next-the-Sea. Check live road or public-transport information rather than relying on times copied into this guide.
  3. Afternoon · WellsWalk the quay and harbour area. The beach is beyond the town and involves additional distance or transport.
  4. Late afternoon · HolkhamFinish with the coast only if daylight, weather, tides and current access make that sensible. The landscape is protected and should be visited gently.

A slower two-day visit

Give Swaffham its own half-day, including local heritage and independent businesses. Use the second day for Wells and Holkham so that changing coastal conditions, walking distances and parking do not turn the trip into a rushed location checklist.

Accessibility and confidence

Plan from features, not assumptions

Historic streets, harbour edges, sand, woodland paths and long distances create different barriers. Check surfaces, gradients, accessible toilets, parking, seating and mobility support with each official destination before travelling.

Visit with respect

  • Stay on public rights of way and signed visitor access.
  • Do not enter private homes or block entrances to working businesses.
  • Follow nature-reserve, dog and seasonal restrictions.
  • Support local businesses without claiming they appeared in the programme.
  • Check weather, tides and return transport before heading onto the coast.
